EDUCATING THE YOUTH ABOUT SEXUAL CONDUCT

Schools are a crucial place for teaching and learning ,as well as imparting new life skills to the youth . They’re also crucial social arenas where sexuality and sexual behaviour collide with a degree of clarity.  Schools can be used to promote health.  Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme Local Municipality’s teenage pregnancy and male medical circumcision programme is to teach young women and men about sexual and reproductive health among the youth of DPKISLM and to offer suggested actions in developing the youth to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

"In South Africa, adolescents aged 10-19 represent a significant proportion of the population at 17,4% and contribute to 2,1% of the total mortality. The health and well-being of adolescents is of particular importance in society as they represent the future work force and contributors to potential economic productivity. However, adolescents may face many challenges such as mental health issues, alcohol"

Adolescents make up a large section of the population in South Africa, accounting for 17,4 % of the population. Adolescent health and wellbeing are particularly important in society because they represent the future labour force and potential contributors to the economy output.  Adolescents on the other hand may encounter a variety of obstacles.  These obstacles include mental health issues, alcohol and cigarette use and early unprotected intercourse with multiple partners.  This increases the risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted illnesses, as well as teenage pregnancy.

The DPKISLM youth programme on teenage pregnancy aims to decrease the number of teenage pregnancies within the community by having hosting outreach  programs.  Like the District AIDS Council Meeting that was held on the 8th of March 2022 in Amersfoort. The Department of Health visited the nearby High school, Hlelimfundo Secondary School . Learners were encouraged to prevent the escalation of HIV/ AIDS, STI’s and teenage pregnancy  .

Miss Ayanda Nzima added that not only did they focus on the schools but also encouraged the whole community of Amersfoort to test for HIV/ AIDS, STI’s. The community was also informed on how to decrease the risks of getting these sexually transmitted illnesses.

“The DPKISLM Youth Liaison Champion’s Office is all about developing the youth and help promote healthy individuals through such programmes.”,  say Ayanda Nzima
